Pokemon from Outer Space (PM Sci-Fi RPG) [Sign-up Thread]
#1
A new planet has been discovered and strange creatures live on it. They are Pokemon never seen before. Scientists are sent to investigate the planet, but they are met by hostile monsters, and almost the entire crew is killed. A survivor returns to the home planet, and relates the terrible news. He tries to describe the monsters and deliver any information he has collected, suspecting that there is some sort of intelligent life on the planet, but seriously wounded, he soon passes away, leaving everyone with more questions than answers.

What are the monsters on the newly discovered planet? Are they hostile? Did they just defend themselves when the scientists arrived? Will they come to attack?

How can one find answers if not travelling to the planet once again? Will one risk doing so? Should one leave the alien Pokemon alone, or does one have to make sure they will not pay a visit on their own?

OOC: We will be a team sent to the planet to investigate. The main goal is to find the intelligent species that live there, but we are likely to encounter ordinary Pokemon at first.

We'll assume we only know about the first 2 generations, so any Pokemon after this can be used as aliens.

Below is a template you can use to create a character. Your Pokemon must be from the first two generations (or Logoran if we'll use them). Starting with one Pokemon is suggested. It may be evolved.

Name Lambert Blackwall
Age 34
Gender Male
Appearance Moderately tall. Has long, white hair and wears a gray coat. Wears tiny, silver spectacles.
Personality Stern, and perhaps slightly insensitive. Can't seem to express his feelings correctly, and has never been able to get along with his little brother. Objective and down to earth; tries to solve problems using thoroughly tested principles and ideas, prioritizing application to theory.
Background Born and raised in Celadon City, and went to school in Saffron for Engineering. He worked at Cinnabar Island until the facilities were destroyed by a volcanic eruption. Currently working as a rocket engineer in Goldenrod City.
Qualities/Skills He is an expert mechanic and electrician. Given the right tools and parts, he can build and fix things quite easily and effectively. He can also program, though he is far less skilled in this.

Pokemon Tauros (named "Tau") - Lambert's only Pokemon. He caught him at the Safari Zone on his first try, and they have been partners since. He knows Earthquake, Double Team, Thunderbolt and Toxic.
Pokemon Characteristics Tau is surprisingly docile, and usually does not show aggression outside of battle.

Items Persim Berries - for Tau.
Multitool - contains a set of wrenches and screw drivers that can be used to take apart and put together most appliances.
Hyper Potions - for emergencies.
Cellphone - modded to contain Pokedex entries.

Name: John "Infinity" Blackwall

Age: 25

Gender: Male

Appearance: Middling in height, but very skinny, even lanky. Wears glasses that tend to reflect glare so that you can't see his eyes. Constantly wears a white lab coat with a black infinity sign (yes, I went there) embroidered on the breast pocket. Silver hair that's too long and never gets brushed. Yes, I know I just described every anime scientist ever.

Personality: Infinity's real name is John, but unless you've known him since he was 12, you don't know that. When he was 12 years old, he insisted that people start calling him Infinity, and to this day he responds only to that. He has never given a reason for why he despises his birth name. Infinity is a prodigy and a genius, but he's also one of those "beautiful mind" types, which means that he is a bit strange. He doesn't speak much at all, and most of the time when he does, his only words are quotations from poetry or other literary works. That's not to say that he cannot or doesn't speak normally, because he does, he just does so very rarely. Infinity is a physicist specializing in general relativity - although he has only just completed his doctorate - with the "soul of a poet." Basically, he's the physical embodiment of the movie Interstellar (which I LOVED). Takes sadistic pleasure in tormenting his older brother.

Background: I'm actually doing a shared background with Isaac, which means that our characters know each other from before the campaign. In this RP, we're actually brothers (which is super ironic, because my brother in real life is named Isaac). Infinity is the younger by 9 years, which means he has always played the obnoxious littler brother role. Grew up in Celadon City, but went to a prestigious research university of Cinnabar Island before the volcanic eruption. Started a year early. Studied there at the same time his brother worked there. Got graduate degree in Johto, in Inland City, then moved back to Saffron City to get doctorate. Currently working as a researcher in Goldenrod.

Qualities/Skills: Genius level intellect. Expert in the field of general relativity, extremely knowledgeable in many other fields of physics, including special relativity, astrophysics, cosmology, quantum mechanics, and dark energy. Socially impaired, but not quite to the point of non-function. Surprisingly knowledgeable/skilled trainer.
Infinity's role in this mission has very little to do with the actual Pokemon. His biggest job is simply to get the spaceship to the right place, because interplanetary travel is not nearly as easy as it sounds. Once on the planet, he will be taking measurements and doing experiments, mostly having to do with gravity. All in all, he is only mildly curious as to the nature of the specimens that the team might encounter.

Pokemon: Nahualatu, male, named Nada. Infinity's long time companion. He got Nada as a Natu when he was twelve, curiously enough right about the time he "changed" his name. As a Natu, Nada was as odd as Infinity, but has since evolved into a strong and capable Pokemon, well trained and fiercely protective of Infinity.

Pokemon Characteristics: Still somewhat odd at times, Nada is a powerful and proud Pokemon, fiercely protective of his trainer. He knows Calm Mind, Dragon Pulse, Psyshock, and Fire Blast. Has the ability Magic Bounce, if we are using those. He has been trained for Special Attack and Speed.

Items: Leftovers for Nada. Hyper Potions, with a few Full Restores. Notebook and pencil, containing sketches of relativistic effects and pages upon pages of poetry quotations, and even a few poems Infinity wrote himself, although he never shares those.

Name Strident Arrendale

Age 24

Gender Female

Appearance Big and butch, Strident is very definitely a lad-ette whose years of diving into whatever inhospitable land sha could find and tackling whatever mon was there have left more than a few scars on her tanned skin. She keeps her red hair cropped short and slightly spiky, kept out of her sharp green eyes with a brown headband when necessary. She usually wears grey or brown short-sleeved shirts, camo cargo pants or khaki shorts, tough combat brown combat boots, and black fingerless gloves. She also wears a leather bandolier over her left shoulder attached to her belt, both covered in numerous pouches for her stuff, except the very front of her bandolier which instead has six flaps meant to clamp pokeballs to her chest for easy access. Currently, only one of those slots has a ball in it.

Personality Strident is bold, daring, and decidedly snarky with a penchant for black humour. She has a love of wildlife, how they fight, and how well she can wrestle with them, which is the biggest reason for all those scars. As a general rule, though, she'll only fight it if it's given permission or she has to attack in self-defense; when it comes to mons in the wild, Strident would rather leave them undisturbed if at all possible. She's a highly capable fighter, both with mons and without, and tends to pretty loud in a non-wild setting. She actually trains her mostly-dragon mons by wrestling them herself.

Background Originally born in, essentially, poke-Australia, but moved to Fractura, New Logora at about 10. From about 14, she regularly went exploring around her home and generally got into as much trouble as possible with the local wildlife, both watching it and fighting it. She was essentially forced into intensive summer studies as a trainer shortly afterwards, becoming quite competent despite her preferences for hitting the opponent hard and fast without regard for status moves, or outright attacking the mon herself.
She went to UNLV and majored in Poke-paleontology, minored in Zoology, and got her hands on a Dyrascal as a final project that combined both. These qualifications, alongside her summers at uni usually involving yet more getting lost or summer courses designed around wilderness survival, have given her a few qualities the exploration team may find useful.

Qualities/Skills High physical strength and stamina. Practical knowledge of working through unexplored territory and wilderness survival. Capable of fending of a few hostile mons (downside: can get a little cocky and underestimate them if they come to blows). A qualified 'expert' at fossil pokemon, should some interesting fossils be found (has been given strict instructions to report any finds and will take them back to UNLV for revival if enough are found). Skilled and powerful trainer.
She's not the sort of intellectual expert most of the party sill be, though definitely intelligent and qualified. Her biggest asset is her ability to fight and her experience in trekking through hostile or unknown territory.

Pokemon Vrachos, her final project Dyrascal all grown up into a Dybelial. He grew fast, what with Strident regularly fighting him herself daily until he could throw her flat on her back. Knows Dragon Flare, Power Gem, Ley Cross, Spirit Punch.

Pokemon Characteristics Vrachos retains his mischievous nature from his childhood, but keeps it under control in the situations that would cause his trainer to remain quiet. When at camp, he's usually kept outside of his ball (unless told otherwise) and can make a decent pillow/teddy bear if necessary.

Items Vrachos carries a Leftovers.
Strident holds many things in her pouches: Hyper Potions, Revives, a survival knife, flint for sparks, flashlight, several different types of Pokeball.

So... just to be clear... are we using New Logoran 'mons or Kanto/Johto 'mons?

If we are using the NL dex, I suppose we would have to be from NL as well. If so, I'll have to change my bio and partner.

I think either goes. I mean, Infinity's from Kanto/Johto, but using a NL evo, plus Kanto/Johto is the certain one. If NL is acceptable is still up in the air.

Whatevs, might as well join in.

Name:Cpt. Vladimir Ivanovich Nesporowsky
Age:53
Gender:Male
Appearance:Elderly man, rather tall and well-built, although not that muscular. At the age of 53, most of his hair are already grayish white, but you can notice some black streaks here and there. Think of it like Saruman's beard. He also, opposingly to his alignemt, has a goatee. Also, a broken nose. Rest of details I leave to you. Most of the time, he wears an olive green jersey underneath old and battered leather vest, and khaki coloured military trousers, though most of the mission he'll probably spend in standard Kantoan military uniform.
Personality: Vladimir is a man with very strict rules and a sense of duty. The things he values most are in order: honor, motherland and companions. Years of military service made his psyche tougher than you could expect, also giving him a huge sen of moralty, hardly disagreeing with anything against his code, with te stubbornness of a donkey holding on to it, even if it does not make any sense. Unfortunately, he suffers from severe case of paranoia, caused by the brain damage
from plane crash.
Background:Vladimir, as a proud citizen of Vermilion(Kanto), like most of his colleagues, after graduating, chose to serve in military instead of going to college. Due to him attending the local flight club, and planning to aqquire pilots licence, he chose to become a fighter jet pilot. After passing all the physical and psychological tests, and spending almost 1000 hours in air and on simulators combined, he became a member of 5th recon division. Not even a week aferwards, the war started(the one mentioned by lt. Surge). After making an alliance wit New Logora, 5th division was one of the first ones that was using new, pokemon-based technologies, mainly the Humbuzz based radr shieds, providing invisibility to radar without the use of stealth technology. After the war, Vladimir took part in resolving smaller conflicts in the worlds equivalents of banana republics. 22 years ago, he retired from active service to join the Kanto-Jotho space program, effectively being one of the first human beings that survived space travel and 13th man who was launched from the Goldenrod cosmodrome. This was his only travel to space, due to plane escorting him and his companion from the place where the landing shuttle was found had a crash, which resulted in mentioned above brain damage. He was qualified to the program to be "tactical support" givng instructions from the space centre, but due to 2 days delay of radio signal, it was impossible for him. Thus, it was decided that he'll be a part of the crew.
Qualities/Skills:Vladimir Ivanovich is a skilled pilot and driver, saying himself that if it can be driven, then he's probably able to drive it, his specialty is mainly jet planes, helicopters and drones, although he's also skiled in all types of shuttles and hovercrafts. He, out of the whole crew has the most practical experience, thus he also serves as backup pilot. His main role though, is to provide the field crew with tips, tactical support and information from inside the whatever will be the base, due to his experience on batlefield and tactical knowlege. He's also partialy responsible for the drone territorial recognition. He also went through al the astronaut and mili ary training and is skilled in the usage of firearms,
Pokemon: Vera the Klaitning. Originally a Humbuzz servi for 5th reckon division, that he was allowed to keep when he retired. Vera is the only person the paranoid veteran trusts, and the one that he values the most.
Pokemon Characteristics:Vera is less active than any other Klaitning, also more chilled and reserved, knowing how to make use both of her skills, and her position as Vlads pupil. She knows the moves Flash Cannon, Arc Weld, Air Slash and Shimmer Shot.(If neither of the New Logora moves are allowed, then I'll take Thunderbolt and Overheat although I don't mind that much, she isn't destined for any eventual combat)
Items:
Standard medical kit including pokemon medicine.(Three of each revival herbs, hyper potions and full heals, to be exact)
A mobile radiostation
Microcopter drone with camera set
Binoculars and directional microphone.[/align]
Hmm... Yeah, that's a signature... I think I'll keep it that way until I find anything better.

Yeah, I was taking either the first two gens or Logoran dex to be fair game. Not sure about regions, but then, why not have New Logora available?

Hmm? I thought that it was going to be gens 1-2 + New Logora? Also, IMO, that would be the most optimal option.

I also note that we are rapidly becoming the traditional dysfunction junction that drama loves so much. I can tell Vlad especially will be an absolute liability...which, of course, makes for story.

I can be dysfunctional.

I actually love this dynamic, and I think it will work really well for this RP. We have the two brothers who can't get along, the buff, butch, unconventional wilderness guide, and the paranoid military man. Intellectuals vs physical-oriented people, discipline vs more casual personalities, social impairment in tight, confined spaces with paranoia. Yes, I think this is going to work very well.

See, these are obvious preludes to bad, bad things between these people. There's no way this would be approved in real life, but it happens all the time in fiction. Because it's more interesting.

Hah... Haven't even noticed the relation, but yeah, this is going to be both typical and interesting. All I need now is a Jothoan/whatever nation Kanto was at war back then, to be "them", and evything will be on it's place, If not, Vraachos is a good beginning, until the plot gives me material. Also, notice how the pokemon are going to get along: Fiercly protective Nahaulatu, weirdly calm tauros, mischievous and diabolic Dybelial, and drama queen of a Klaitning... Yup, can't wait to see it.
All we need to complete the party now is a medic. We have scientist, mechanic, reaserch and a soldier, so a medic is a must to a balanced party of 5 in a interplanetary flight adventure.
Kath, Vlad is on first glance personification of all "evil" tropes. Russian, goatee, has an accent...

Since people are interested in NL Pokemon, we'll use them as well. Unless they evolve from a Pokemon after generation 2. Of course, we may own other Pokemon later, if we catch them on the planet.

I'll go with a new character I started making once, but which I never role-played with. It seems I will be playing the bad guy . . .

Name
Hakugin

Age
23

Gender
Male

Appearance
Hakugin is a tall man and quite slim, but he becomes stronger than his looks reveal whenever his temper allows. If you look into his rather pale face, you will see dark green-blue eyes, sad, tired or just revealing composure; yet he often carries a slight smile displayed by his dark lips. His facial expression is often interpreted as that of a man who likes his life and what he is doing, but who knows, deep inside, that he is involved in a horrible plan, mission or society.

Some people have experienced that Hakugin's gaze can be rather uncomfortable, but it is probable that these people were possible victims-to-be of his cruel acts. However, an unknowing person might still experience that he looks through you, as if he is in an attempt to find a weakness to use against you whenever he gets the opportunity to do so.

Hakugin's straight hair is very bright, bearing a silver-white colour. Because of the aura of magnificence it gives him, he keeps it long, tied in a tail behind his back. His hair have a smooth but firm quality, and a few stripes of it can sometimes be seen having fallen down before his face.

When it comes to his choice of clothes, he likes to wear long coats and black boots. Whenever the weather allows, he wears his double-breasted, black leather coat and have a red-black-white chequered scarf wrapped round his neck almost like a tie.

Personality
When meeting Hakugin, you will first notice his composed and cold personality. He is very systematic and a skilled planner, but also very hard and merciless, never reluctant to risk the lives of other people to carry out his plans. Many people think that Hakugin is calm and uses little violence; however, his composed manner can suddenly be interrupted by his fiery temper and physical violence sometimes follows. The most significant cause of this otherwise composed man's outbursts is his intense hatred. It is unclear what is the cause of his hatred, but he despises weak and incompetent people, soft and gentle people, as well as drug-addicts and other persons with severe problems. It is true, that many others in Hakugin's society shared his hateful views, although seldom as intensively.

His greatest interest lies in planning and organising. When working, he is very focused and solves most problems given to him. Hakugin can get very far with his skills, but his hatred has led him on a path of evil.

Background
During most of his life, Hakugin has been driven by hatred, and although he is intelligent, his logic has often been twisted by this hatred. He was not the only person following such distorted logic, however, for in the great city where he lived, there formed an organisation which members reasoned in much the same way. Their leader was very skilled in convincing people and make them follow him, perhaps planting such thoughts in the minds of his followers. Being a person filled with anger, who easily finds victims for his hatred, Hakugin joined the organisation and quickly ascended to a high position.

This organisation, which finally came to rule the city, strove for a world without weakness, determined to dispose of people they saw as weak. They were so merciless that they executed people without trial, and surviving prisoners were put to work as slaves in factories. Hakugin is one of the persons who planned the gathering and transportation of prisoners, but have also seen and met his victims at the various spots where they were being held. His manner toward these people was cruel, as whenever he came to sight the prisoners, his hatred would intensify.

Eventually, the evil organisation was overthrown and their leader died. All members of the organisation who managed to escape went into hiding, but later came to secretly meet with one another. Their party started to rebuild itself, but remained underground. Due to the horrible times when the organisation had been in power, people avoided even mentioning it, and if anyone suspected its return, no one would believe that person if he said so.

Qualities/Skills
Hakugin is composed and has control over himself in most situations. However, there are matters that can make him lose his temper. He is very focused on the work before him, be it mathematics, graph theory or programming. He knows some martial arts, but is not a muscular person made for fighting.

Hakugin is skilled at using computers and can also use the spaceship. He is not as skilled in fixing broken machinery though. He can fix a radio and his small computer, but not spacecraft for instance. His skills lean more toward software than hardware.

One of Hakugin's problems is that he is not very social or get on well with other people. He tries to stay out of trouble by avoiding too much contact, but he works well in a team if the team has the same goal; then there is no problem at all in communicating with other people.

Pokemon
[Image: Spr_5b_227.png] Named Commandor.

Pokemon Characteristics
Since Hakugin is not an expert fighter, Commandor usually helps him in battle. The metal bird has been trained for combat and is very swift and agile. Commandor has been specially trained in making screeching noises that can disturb or paralyse enemies. He has also been modified to be able to communicate with certain devices via radio signals, such as Hakugin's computer. This way, Hakugin can easily keep in touch with his Pokemon. In few cases, these signals can also be used to disturb an enemy's equipment.

Commandor has been trained in speed and attack, and has a natural defence. His weaknesses are elemental attacks such as fire and electricity.

Items
Hakugin is armed with a laser gun. On the ship, he has also brought a laser cannon, which he seldom uses, since it is heavy to carry around. He also has some medical equipment and other items necessary for a journey. Specific for this journey is a small computer where he is to store information about the alien Pokemon and their habitat.

Objective
As the rest of the team, Hakugin has been sent to the planet to find an intelligent species of Pokemon. However, what the others are not aware about, is that he does not work for the government. Hakugin has been sent by his secret organisation to gather data that is useful for them. Their wish is to gain contact with the intelligent species and perhaps gain help from them or maybe find a way to control them. The plan is for Hakugin to be the only one returning from this journey, at least the only one with valuable information, and to deliver good news for his people; that the new species wish to co-operate with them, or that the new species has shared some valuable secrets of technology. It might be, that the new species has nothing to give at all, maybe only trouble, but Hakugin's organisation has grown rather desperate.

Hmm... Is the organization Team Rocket by any means? It doesn't mach the description, but it's fun to think.
You can start whenever you want, after all, someone has to kich tentacled asses of evil Malamar aliens at war with Gardy line.
Hmm... Yeah, that's a signature... I think I'll keep it that way until I find anything better.
#18
I made another RPG where the Rockets started a war and enslaved people and Pokemon, and in that case they would match better with the organisation. Since you don't know that story, however, and its not part of this RPG (it's from one called Pokemon Wastelands which has a post-apocalyptic setting), then I decided not to mention the Rockets, but just call it a secret organisation, not to make it confusing. In yet another RPG I gave them another name, so it always up to the roleplay itself and what world it takes place in. If it's all right, we can say they are the Rocket gang. They are an evil organisation looking for power at least.

They are one of the wannabe-followers that started to pop out after Giovannis defeat/suicide or Radio Tower seige, I assume? That seems logical enough.

Name Wally PKMN

Age 14 years

Gender Male

Appearance A blond light-skinned male, Wally has neatly kept hair that feels very soft to touch. Don't let these traits fool you, because his eyes are bright blue. So, not albino.

Personality Eccentric, humorous, and intelligent, this ace trainer hides his friendly side behind a thick facade. He most opens up most when he's around his partners, especially when he's alone with them.

Background Born in Kanto, Wally is an ace trainer. Ever since defeating the Indigo League in Kanto and exploring Johto, Wally has been looking for a new challenge. Now, this is his chance to find that and contribute to the society. What an opportunity!

Qualities/Skills Ability to communicate with pokémon, to a degree. His pokémon know the HM moves fly and cut, who knows how that could be useful. He can often calm down raging pokémon. He also shares a special bond with all flying types, whether he's known them for years or just met them. Wally is exceptionally skilled at the pokéviolin, and can instantly make any pokémon drowsy; but only if they can hear the charming tune over the din of the battle, that is; Fortississimo isn't always enough.
(optional)
Pokemon Pidgeot (female, nicknamed Fidget), Parasect (male, nicknamed Pirate)
OOC: A second pokémon should be allowed because they're both so common, despite being trained so much by Wally. And I can't choose just one of them.
Pokemon Characteristics Fidget is impatient at times, but never gets bored during a battle. Pirate shares the affinity for battle with Fidget, although his is much more pronounced that hers.
(optional)
Items Hyper Potions - Wally always stockpiles them - and a pokéviolin, functions similarly to a pokéflute.
(optional)
